Our Faculty Member Discussed Edremit Olives in the Documentary "Anadoludakiler"
As part of the "Anadoludakiler Project," launched by the Ministry of Industry and Technology's General Directorate of Development Agencies on June 28, 2024, with the slogan "Prosperity, Accumulation, and Skill," the fifth episode of the documentary series aired on NTV featured two significant cultural and economic values of the South Marmara Region: Edremit Olives and Gönen Needle Lace.
The segment dedicated to Edremit olives covered various topics such as the region's olive growing tradition, the characteristics of Edremit olives and olive oil, production processes, and their contribution to the regional economy and culture. In this context, Dr. Tuba Öncül Abacıgil, Head of the Olive Growing and Olive Processing Technology Program at Balıkesir University Edremit Vocational School, provided evaluations regarding local olive growing activities and shared the unique features of Edremit olive/olive oil and its positive effects on health with the audience.
Additionally, Esra Karakoç, Head of the Tourism and Rural Development Unit at the South Marmara Development Agency (GMKA), provided comprehensive information on the discovery and economic evaluation of local potentials, the branding of traditional products, and the processes of sustainable rural development and job creation. The olive and olive oil producers featured in the documentary shared their experiences regarding the production processes carried out in the Edremit Gulf, showcasing the tangible reality of the region's agriculture.
The "Anadoludakiler Project," which is currently being implemented in 81 provinces across Turkey, aims to achieve both economic development and social transformation by integrating traditional production skills and geographically indicated products with modern technology. The cultural component of the project is supported by the documentary series prepared by NTV and various promotional events, thereby increasing public awareness and interest.
